Hello boys and girls,
Successful Water Flag!
Our application for our Green school flag for water has been successful - what great news that is!
You might remember that our day of action was to be held on Friday 13th March and then the school was suddenly shut on the 12th. As we had worked so hard on the application I decided to go ahead and submit it. I included an outline of our plan for that day and an outline of all the work you were doing in preparation up to then in your classes with your teachers.
They wrote that were very impressed by all the efforts. So well done to all of you. A special word of thanks should go to our hard working Green School Committee. The pupils on the committee are Orla, Aidan and Eoin in 6th class, Aine, Eoin and Alice in 5th class, Michael, Hazel and Aine in 4th class, and Katie, Dylan and Pierce in 3rd class.
We hope to have our day of action and a flag raising ceremony when we get back to school.
Colouring Competition Winners!
I would like to announce the winners of the colouring /poster competition that had been decided on and were also to be announced at the school assembly on 13th March. In each class group there is one main winner and a runner-up. The pictures and posters will be displayed on our Green school notice board and the prizes held over until we meet again! Thanks again to the committee who voted on their favourite picture and helped make the choice as fair as possible.
Junior Infants Winner: James D Runner-up: Eoin O B.
Senior Infants Winner: Liam Runner-up: Emilia
1st class Winner: Matthew Runner-up: Tom C.
2nd class Winner: Leah Runner-up: Hugh.
3rd class Winner: Dylan Runner-up: Leah
4th class Winner: Eimear O'S Runner-up: Emily
5th class Winner: Holly Runner-up: Tam
6th class Winner: Orla Runner-up: Megan O'T
There were many great ideas for a school slogan and they will be displayed around the school.
The slogan that was chosen was Reduce the flow of H2O
Thanks also to Jack Barcoe (our caretaker), Becky (our cleaner) and Mr Coady who are also part of our Committee and helped out.
In particular I would like to commend Aidan, Eoin and Orla from 6th class as they took responsibility for the emptying of the recycling bins every week. They have always done a fantastic job and reminded us all if there were items in the bin that should not have been there. Well done to them. We will miss them in September and the incoming group of Alice, Aine and Eoin will hopefully keep up the high standard.
I hope that your efforts with recycling are being carried through at home as well.
But for now....Well done everyone !!!
Kind regards,

Sustainable Energy projects
We submitted two projects. The first was about saving water by not washing clothes too much. The second was about saving water (and power) by not boiling the kettle too often. We made a video in school about each project. Lesina and Adrian also created a clever animation each for the projects.

Green School history
We applied for our second Green School flag last year - this time for energy awareness. We've run successful poster and slogan competitions, and kept careful track of energy usage in the school with suggestions for how to cut down. Everyone has joined in and our highlight was a NO / LOW ENERGY DAY on 21 March.
Teachers were asked to switch off electrical items and go back to basics for a day - no computers, whiteboards, lights or photocopying! Instead we had oral lessons, drawing and writing, physical activities and learning games! A pedal-powered generator was demonstrated in school - to the great delight of pupils and teachers - and there was a Bring & Take Sale (a Toy and Game Swap) to show how some people's unwanted stuff can be welcomed by someone else. This was an exchange system - no money involved. Everyone wore at least one item of green on the day to demonstrate their commitment.
